Tan Weiliang breaks his hoodoo and wins his first event of the year since January...by Junior Tay

Tan Weiliang had not been able to replicate his success of 2012 this year. Last year's 'Swiss King' had started the year brightly, winning the Kickoff 2013 event in January and have since failed to top the standings in local chess events (unless you count the National 960 event where he finished 2nd to Jarred Neubronner on tiebreak)...until the Teck Ghee Open. Leading the field with 5.5/6, Weiliang maintained steady equality against Jarred Neubronner throughout the game as he only needed a draw to clinch the title on tiebreak (if necessary). Jarred had no choice but to complicate, as a draw is as good as a loss as in both cases, he would still finish 4th.
The critical final round where Weiliang, Jingyao and Reyes won to emerge top 3 (respectively) in the Teck Ghee Open.

This ensured Weiliang a clear 1st placing, 1/2 point ahead of Jingyao and Reyes.

This event was a tale of missed chances for Jarred. In his earlier game against Jingyao, he also had chances to play for the win...

Our thanks to Jarred for his game fragments (and commentary). In the following game, Black, being exchange and pawn up, had to find Rh4 which forces the exchange of Queen to ensure an easily won endgame. However, when it rains, it pours...as Black missed 5 chances to play the critical move....
